BEFORE WE GET STARTED…

This week we are featuring:

  • a way to go outside before it gets to cold

  • getting a pet with someone after only 1 date (ok not really but it would be fun to pretend right?)

  • performing your own music in Provo

Don’t forget to reply with your favorite date idea this week.

THREE DATES, ALL OF THEM UNDER TEN BUCKS

Water You Can See the Bottom Of

Walking · $10 for two

Cascade Springs is a set of clear spring pools and small terraced falls about forty minutes up the Alpine Loop, with a half mile of flat boardwalk built out over the water. I’ve heard that the trout sit in the shallow pools where you can watch them from the railing. It is $10 per vehicle for a three day pass, which means one car covers both of you.

The road closes to cars for the winter, so its now or never, because with a deadline, you’ve got to go now rather than later.

Text them and say: “I’m driving up the Alpine Loop Saturday afternoon, the aspens are turning and the road closes for winter before long. Want to come?”

Featured Single: Get Your Own Card

We’ll feature you as a single in an upcoming issue, using your photo and a few lines about you, so other readers can reach out and ask you out, all for $5. Think a one-person profile card that goes to the whole list instead of doom scrolling on Mutual.

How it works:

(1) Venmo $5 to me, @hamiltonpr,

(2) reply to this email with a photo, your first name, age, year and major, what you are looking for, and how you want people to reach you.

Pet Project

Browsing · free

The nearest Petco is in Orem, at 305 East University Parkway, open 9am to 9pm, and it has a full aquatics department. The game: you each pick the pet the other person would actually own.

Start in aquatics and work outward; I mean, obviously for some people if you’re not into fish that’s a dealbreaker, right?

If you already took somebody out once and it went fine, this could be the second ask; its not a huge deal of a date, but its just kind of unique and interesting.

Call them and say: “I’m going to Petco Tuesday to look at the fish and pick out a pet you’d have to live with. You in?”

Stop Trying to Calm Down

Nerves · Alison Wood Brooks

Harvard’s Alison Wood Brooks ran a set of studies on people about to do something nerve-racking, and the tasks she picked were karaoke singing, public speaking and math. Almost everybody assumed the right move was to calm down, but actually… it was the wrong move. The people who instead said “I am excited” out loud, to nobody, right before they started, felt better and actually performed better than the ones trying to talk themselves down. She says nerves and excitement are the same physical state, so you are not fighting your heart rate, you are relabeling it, and relabeling is a much smaller job.

“Compared with those who attempt to calm down, individuals who reappraise their anxious arousal as excitement feel more excited and perform better.”

Alison Wood Brooks, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 2014

Cheaper to Sing Than to Watch

Music · $8 for two

Velour runs an open mic every Wednesday at 8PM at 135 North University Avenue, in the 149-capacity room where Imagine Dragons and Neon Trees played before anyone outside Provo had heard of them. It is $4 to watch and $3 to perform... somehow they want you to sing more than they want you to listen. Sign-up is first come, first served; everybody who plays gets two songs.

Get there by 7 if either of you wants a spot, because the list fills before the doors open at 8. Check the calendar first, since Velour’s own page says the schedule shifts on weeks with a special event booked.

When you see them in person, say: “There’s an open mic at Velour Wednesday at eight, four bucks at the door. I’m going. You free Wednesday?”

Last week’s lead was Country Dancing Even if its Your First Time, the $6 Monday or Thursday night at Marnell’s with the free beginner lesson at the start. It runs every Monday and Thursday, so if you went, or if you go this Monday, rate it 1 to 10 and tell us.
