How should I Spend the 4th of July?

Happy Fourth of July!

That means half the valley is already outside enjoying the good weather and good friends and the other half is wishing they had someone to be outside with. You can fix that with one text.

Don’t use the 4th as an excuse to get out of talking to them. The worst they say is no (darn it, sorry if that happens to you), but then you’ll just ask someone else (I promise you’ll be ok).

Remember that someone saying “no” isn’t a mark on who you are, its just another opportunity to find someone who will say “yes”.

With that, let’s get into some date ideas for this week!

You don’t need to have money to go on a good date and you don’t need a ticket to see the biggest fireworks show in the country. On the Fourth, drive or walk up into the neighborhoods east of LaVell Edwards Stadium, the streets that sit above campus on the hill, and grab a curb or a patch of grass before dark. The show closes out the Stadium of Fire around 10pm, and from up there you get the full sky without paying a dime or fighting the crowd inside. Bring a blanket and get there early, I hear the locals know this trick too. Get the best seats in Provo, all for free.

How to ask: “Fourth of July fireworks from the hill above the stadium. Free, no crowd, bring a blanket. You in?”

Water · $30 - $50

Outdoors Unlimited on BYU campus rents a single kayak for around $25-30 a day, paddle and life jacket included. Just take it twenty-five minutes up Provo Canyon to Deer Creek State Park and launch right off the beach. It costs $20 per vehicle in the park, so the more groups you can fit in one car, the better. The water is clearer and colder than Utah Lake (thank goodness). Reserve ahead to ensure you get a kayak, and its best to go in the morning before the afternoon wind kicks up and makes it hard to stay upright.

How to ask: “So I’m renting a kayak Saturday morning at Deer Creek. Come paddle with me before it gets too windy.”

Dress up like you’re going somewhere expensive, then take it to Wendy’s. Bring a real tablecloth, a candle, flowers, whatever you can think of, and order entirely off the value menu.

How to ask: “Dinner Thursday, dress code is formal. I’m not telling you where yet, just trust me.”

Art · ~$70

Red Giant Experiences in Orem runs a blacklight splatter room, and a private session for two lands around $30. They hand you washable neon paint, a canvas, and protective gear, then turn you loose for 45 minutes with paint guns, balloons, and music. Wear something you don’t care about, because you will both end up covered. You take home a canvas neither of you could have painted on purpose.

How to ask: “Found a blacklight paint room in Orem. Wear clothes you can ruin and let’s make a mess Friday.”

Games · ~$100 / 4 people

BotSpot on University Avenue in downtown Provo drops you into a battle arena driving weaponized robots, up to eight drivers at once, which is exactly why it works as a double date. A one-hour arena for up to four people runs $100, so split it with another couple and it lands around $50 each. Grab those teams, because it gets a lot more fun when there’s trash talk on the line. Walk-ins are welcome, but book ahead on a weekend before the arenas fill up.

How to ask: “Robot battles at BotSpot downtown this week. Grab another couple, we’ll run teams. You in?”
