Before we get started…

School is about to start for the fall; if there was ever a time to ask out that girl in your ward that you’ve been thinking about, its now or never. Its never gonna be an easier time than now (cause worst case scenario you have to see her for a few weeks in stead of a few months). Just send it (and lmk how it goes!!).

Don’t forget to reply with your favorite date idea this week.

THREE DATES, TWO WAYS TO ASK

The Temple With the Llamas

Touring · Free, or $20 for two with lunch

The Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple sits at 311 W 8500 S in Spanish Fork, twenty five minutes south of Provo, and it's open 10 am to 8 pm every day with free walk-in tours until 7. The tour runs ten or fifteen minutes, and after that you're loose on the grounds with the animal park: llamas, cows, peacocks, parrots and a koi pond. There's a vegetarian buffet from 11 to 6 on a suggested ten dollar donation, Govinda's gift shop is open the whole time, and if you go on a big holiday it's the same place that hosts the Festival of Colors.

I would assume that neither of you has been here, and that's part of the magic. There's no expert and no host, just two people reading the same sign about the same deity, and I mean, come on, there’s gonna be llamas.

Before you ask, this time try picking the day first. In my experience saying “sometime” is another way of saying “I’m not trying to make this happen”. In my opinion, a date with a day attached is the only kind that actually happens.

When you see them in person, you can say: "This is kind of random, since we only ever talk at FHE, but I'm gonna go to the Krishna temple in Spanish Fork Saturday to see the llamas. Want to come as a date?"

The Wait-Three-Days Rule Is Dead

Timing · Mutual

Every December Mutual surveys its users (which is helpful for those of us who are still not married haha). In last year's report they asked how long you should wait to message someone after a first date. 96 percent said within 24 hours. So… unfortunately, that is not three days, not until she texts first, and not whatever your roommate told you. Honestly, this is the app that watches more Utah County first dates than anyone, and its own users called the waiting game dead. So after The Temple With the Llamas, text her that night or the next morning and just say something specific you remember that was funny or you liked: the llama that went for her sleeve, the buffet, the peacock that followed you back to the car. You don’t usually get ignored by a person when you show you were glad to be there.

"Literally 96% of you said that you should message within 24 hours."

ASKING FOR ADVICE: We know it can be kind of awkward asking someone on a date. How do you make it not awkward?

Sketchy Behavior

Drawing · $30-50 for two

The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium is at 12033 Lone Peak Parkway in Draper, forty minutes up I-15, open 10 to 6 with last entry an hour before close. Bring a student ID for three dollars off each ticket. Just bring two notebooks or whatever you can find, sit down on the floor in front of the Ocean Explorer tank or the penguin research station, and draw whatever swims past.

Even as a not super artistically driven person, this can be really fun. Honestly, I imagine showing someone a bad drawing of a ray, and just laughing. All of the sudden the conversation is so much easier, not harder.

Sometimes you may get a "maybe" or a "let me check my week," so here's what to do with it: take it as an answer, not a puzzle. Seriously just don’t worry about it too much because if she wants to come, she'll tell you.

Text them and try saying: "This is a weird text, I know, but I'm driving up to the aquarium Saturday to sit on the floor and draw fish, like the date we joked about after institute. Want to be my plus one?"

Ask How She Feels About It, Not What It Is

Questions · Charles Duhigg

In Supercommunicators, Charles Duhigg points at twelve experiments by Kardas, Kumar and Epley where they put people in conversation with a stranger, where some were handed small talk conversations and some were given genuinely personal questions. They found that with the genuinely deep questions, the conversations felt less awkward and left people happier and more connected than they had predicted. The working model you could use is: don't ask about the facts of her life, ask how she feels about her life. Not just "what's your major," but "do you actually like it."

"Ask how she feels about her life, not the facts of it."

Featured Single: Get Your Own Card

We’ll feature you as a single in an upcoming issue, using your photo and a few lines about you, so other readers can reach out and ask you out, all for $5. Think a one-person profile card that goes to the whole list instead of doom scrolling on Mutual.

How it works:

(1) Venmo $5 to me, @hamiltonpr,

(2) reply to this email with a photo, your first name, age, year and major, what you are looking for, and how you want people to reach you.

Peak Timing

Sightseeing · Free

Kyhv Peak Road leaves US-189 about two miles up Provo Canyon, and four miles of paved switchbacks later you're at the Kyhv Peak Overlook, a pullout with a railing and the entire valley underneath it. It’s free, and there’s no hiking involved (unless that’s your thing, then have at it!). In Provo, sunset is about 8:15 right now with another half hour of light after it, so leave by 7:30 and bring food, because there's nothing up there. In all honesty, this tends to be a makeout spot... but you’re on a first date. You’ve got to explain that is not your intent from the get-go or it might get awkward.

This is important: even if she says no, you're still going to see her Tuesday, and it'll all be fine. Just say hi first and keep it short. Honestly, we all just decide how to act based off of how others react around us. If you’re awkward, she will too. But act like a guy who asked a normal question and got a normal answer, and that's what it turns into.

Call them and try saying: "This might sound weird coming from me. Friday after work I'm driving up to Kyhv Peak for the sunset, and I want to just enjoy the sunset for a date with you. Want to come?"
